Matt Melnyk, the pilot behind the stunning photographs, was flying a Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Calgary to London, U.K. Once above the clouds, Melnyk described the display as historical, with the vibrant colors that included green, red, and deep magenta illuminating the sky.

“This was the most incredible display of aurora I’ve ever seen in my 20 years of flying,” Melnyk exclaimed. The remarkable conditions allowed for a clearer view, free from light pollution.
