Murdoch Poll Highlights Struggles in Trump’s Second Term Administration

A recent poll conducted by Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal highlights significant challenges for Donald Trump during his second term. The survey, conducted between January 8 and 13, involved 1,500 registered voters and reveals a notable drop in public confidence regarding the economy.

Key Findings of the Poll

Since last summer, voter perceptions of the economy have deteriorated significantly. Currently, a majority of respondents, approximately 50%, believe the economy has worsened over the past year. Only 35% of voters think it has improved.

  • Approval rating for Trump’s job performance stands at 45%.
  • 54% of voters disapprove of his performance, widening the gap from 6 points in July to 9 points now.

Public Concerns Over Foreign Policy

The poll also indicates that many voters feel Trump is overly focused on foreign affairs. A significant 53% of participants believe he is investing excessive time in foreign matters, which they consider secondary to pressing domestic issues like rising prices. This sentiment is echoed in another poll, where 64% of registered voters labeled the cost of living as a “very serious problem.”

Views on Military Engagement

Trump’s recent foreign policy actions have also drawn scrutiny. Voters are concerned about his military decisions, especially after the controversial abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. An AP-NORC poll shows that 56% think Trump has exceeded acceptable limits in using military force, while 61% disapprove of his foreign policy approach.

Trump’s Economic Strategies

In response to economic worries, Trump has proposed measures aimed at reducing costs. These include capping credit card interest rates and restricting large investor acquisitions of homes. Despite these efforts, disapproval of his management of inflation is growing, with a 17-point gap in disapproval versus approval.

  • 58% of participants attribute the current economic situation to Trump’s policies.
  • Only 31% hold former President Joe Biden accountable.

Support from His Base

Despite the overall negative perceptions, Trump still enjoys substantial backing from his core supporters. An impressive 92% of voters who plan to support him in the upcoming 2024 election approve of his performance, with 70% expressing strong approval.

This polling data illustrates the struggles facing Trump as he navigates his second term, revealing a disconnect between his priorities and the concerns of American voters. Voter dissatisfaction may influence his approach as he endeavors to regain confidence in his leadership capabilities.
