Lara Croft Anime Redesign Rejected by Original Tomb Raider Developers in Japan

In a recent revelation, Paul Douglas, one of the original creators of Tomb Raider, discussed a proposed anime-style redesign for Lara Croft. This request originated from Victor Interactive, a Japanese publisher, who aimed to make the iconic character more appealing to a Japanese audience. Douglas, who co-created Tomb Raider, shared the details via his Bluesky account.

Lara Croft’s Anime Redesign Request

The redesign request included suggestions for Lara Croft to have exaggerated features, such as “huge eyes and head.” Victor Interactive even sent a fax containing design proposals during the late stages of Tomb Raider’s development. However, another key developer, Toby Gard, preferred to maintain the original look of Lara.

Finding a Compromise

To resolve the differences between the developers and the publisher, a compromise was made. While the primary character design remained unchanged, the game’s manual and guide included manga-style illustrations. Douglas noted that he was unsure who ultimately produced these illustrations.

Timeline of Development Changes

  • The initial request was to redesign all in-game and cutscene models.
  • This evolved to changing just the in-game models.
  • Eventually, the focus narrowed to only altering Lara, and then specifically her head.

Remakes and Future Projects

The original Tomb Raider is set to receive a complete remake titled Legacy of Atlantis, scheduled for release later this year. The remake will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

In addition, Crystal Dynamics is currently developing a new entry in the Tomb Raider series, known as Catalyst. This upcoming title will feature Lara Croft in Northern India. Recently, Eva La Dare, recognized for her role as Sheva Alomar in Resident Evil 5, was announced as part of the cast for Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
