Modder Unveils All-in-One Console Featuring PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch 2

Chinese modder 小宁子 XNZ has developed an innovative all-in-one gaming console that merges the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Switch 2 into a single device. This creative endeavor arose from a desire to play exclusive titles without switching between multiple consoles.

Ningtendo PXBOX 5: A Unique Hybrid Console

This ambitious project, named “Ningtendo PXBOX 5,” reflects an integration of ancient casting techniques and modern gaming technology. XNZ chose an Apple Mac Pro as a conceptual model, utilizing its triangular design to compactly house the three gaming systems.

Design and Manufacturing Techniques

To create this hybrid console, XNZ deconstructed each system to preserve their internal components. The designs emphasized a unified cooling system, with motherboards placed within a triangular layout. The cooling mechanism is based on the successful cooling design of the Xbox Series X.

  • Motherboards are situated on each side of the triangle.
  • A fan situated at the base ensures efficient cooling for all components.

XNZ initially explored a 3D-printed heatsink but found the CNC milling costs prohibitive. Instead, the modder turned to lost-wax casting, a traditional Chinese metalworking technique, to create an affordable and intricate cooling block.

Creating the Cooling Block

The lost-wax casting process involves building a model from a temporary material, which is then coated and heated to form a mold. The final step includes pouring molten metal into the cavity, resulting in the cooling structure required for the console.

After finalizing the cooling block, XNZ attached copper plates to help distribute heat effectively. The motherboards for the PS5 and Xbox were then affixed, which simplified the process compared to earlier steps.

Integrating All Components

The console’s design accounts for the unique needs of each system, especially the Nintendo Switch 2. XNZ optimized the Switch’s motherboard by creating a custom 3D-printed case for seamless integration with the docking station.

  • Power supplies were measured to ensure efficient performance.
  • A single 250W power unit is sufficient for all three consoles when operating one at a time.

XNZ incorporated a dedicated fan compartment and a triangular housing for the power supply to enhance cooling. Additional components, like color-coded LED lighting and an Arduino-controlled system for power management, added a modern touch to the console.

Final Assembly and Testing

The console concluded with the assembly of the enclosure and decorative finishes, including a prominent “Ningtendo PXBOX 5” label. The testing phase confirmed functionality, allowing swift transitions between games, albeit with some limitations.

Switching between games requires closing the current game to avoid overloading the power supply. The final device does not support disc drives for the PS5 and Xbox, maintaining a digital-only format.

Conclusion

Despite its limitations, the Ningtendo PXBOX 5 represents a remarkable feat of engineering. It combines elements from three major gaming consoles into one cohesive unit, showcasing creativity and technical skill in gaming technology.
