Trump Proposes 200% Tariff on French Wine for Perceived Snub

US President Donald Trump has proposed a dramatic 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes. This bold move comes amid tensions surrounding French President Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to participate in Trump’s newly announced “Board of Peace.” The board is designed to resolve global conflicts and aims to bring together various world leaders.

Trump’s Tariff Threat Linked to Macron’s Snub

Trump directly associated the tariff threat with Macron’s non-participation in the peace initiative. While discussing the matter, Trump remarked, “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon.” He further stated, “I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join, but he doesn’t have to join.”

Responses from France

A source close to President Macron informed AFP that France “does not intend to answer favourably” to Trump’s invitation. This source labeled the tariff threat an “unacceptable and ineffective” attempt to influence French foreign policy.

The Board of Peace Initiative

Trump initially introduced the concept of the Board of Peace in September 2022. The initiative aims to address global conflicts, with the participation of around 60 national leaders so far. According to preliminary documents, membership beyond three years would require a contribution of $1 billion from each participating country.

  • Purpose: Resolve global conflicts.
  • Funding: $1 billion per member for extended membership.
  • Current Invitees: 60 national leaders invited.

International Reactions

Other governments have expressed caution regarding Trump’s proposal. Diplomatic circles warn that this initiative might undermine the United Nations’ established role in conflict resolution. Trump also extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for participation in the board.

Macron’s Offer for a G7 Summit

In a separate development, Macron reportedly sent a private message to Trump. He proposed organizing a G7 summit in Paris, which could include Russia on the sidelines, amidst discussions about the potential US acquisition of Greenland. Additionally, Ukraine and Denmark have also been considered for invitations.

As tensions between the leaders escalate, the international community watches closely for developments regarding tariffs and diplomatic relations.
