According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was reported around 10:19 a.m. An estimated 30 to 40 semi-trucks were involved in the chain-reaction crash. First responders found it challenging to reach the site due to the weather conditions. Some utilized snowmobiles to access stranded motorists.

Witness Accounts
Pedro Mata, one of the drivers near the front of the pileup, reported seeing several vehicles swerving before a tractor-trailer jackknifed in front of him. He took immediate action by steering his vehicle into a ditch to avoid further collision.
Clair Beach-Paver shared her experience of driving on I-196 hours before the crash. She reported encountering poor driving conditions, noting that she observed at least 11 vehicles already in the ditch during her trip from Hudsonville to Holland.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement confirming the closure of I-196 in both directions between Hudsonville and Zeeland. Officials advised motorists to avoid the area due to the hazardous weather.
Local authorities coordinated transportation for stranded motorists using buses from Hudsonville Public Schools and MAX Transit. Individuals were advised to stay inside their vehicles until they could be transported to safety.

State Senator Roger Victory from Hudsonville acknowledged that the area is known for its challenging driving conditions. “It’s a stretch that can change quickly from good to bad conditions, particularly due to squalls,” he said.
