WA Residents Advised to Avoid Floodwaters Following Weekend Downpour

Residents in Western Australia’s northernmost region are advised to avoid floodwaters after a recent heavy rainfall event. Over the past weekend, the remote Kimberley community of Kalumburu experienced over 120 millimeters of rain.

Flooding in Kalumburu

Kalumburu is situated approximately 3,000 kilometers north of Perth and has a population of around 380. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), rainfall in surrounding areas is estimated to have reached between 150 and 200 millimeters, leading to isolated flooding conditions.

Alerts Issued

  • Sunday evening: Flood Advice issued for Kalumburu.
  • Monday morning: Watch and Act alert was issued for residents.

Local resident Graeme Pollett reported that while homes have not sustained damage, water levels are beginning to intrude into backyards, making some areas difficult to access. He noted that the community is navigating the conditions calmly.

Community Response

Graeme Pollett mentioned that while transportation around town has become challenging, residents are taking the situation in stride and appreciating the surrounding views. He remarked, “The football oval has been pretty much inundated with water.”

Leon Gardiner, Superintendent of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), stated authorities are actively monitoring the flooding situation. “Largely, the community is isolated, but that’s not unusual for this time of year,” he commented.

Ongoing Monitoring

Currently, no properties have been reported as damaged. DFES is collaborating with the community to identify vulnerable individuals who may require evacuation. Additionally, preparations are underway to address potential further rainfall.

Looking Ahead

In terms of weather forecast, BOM meteorologist Jessica Lingard provided some positive news. “Thunderstorms have cleared away from the area, leading to improved conditions over the coming days.”

  • Tropical low 16U is positioned off the northern Kimberley coastline.
  • There is a 50% chance that it will develop into a tropical cyclone later this week.

Lingard cautioned that while floodwaters are expected to recede, the Kalumburu region remains on alert for possible further rain, especially if 16U impacts the area.
