Sphere to Debut at National Harbor, Washington D.C.
Sphere Entertainment is set to unveil a new venue at National Harbor, a bustling tourism center in the Washington D.C. metro area. This marks the second Sphere project in the United States, following the acclaimed Las Vegas Sphere.
Details of the National Harbor Sphere
The new Sphere will feature a smaller-scale design, accommodating 6,000 seats compared to the 18,600 available in Las Vegas. This innovative project will be made possible through a mix of public and private financing, which includes approximately $200 million in incentives provided by state and local entities, along with contributions from private sources.
Architectural Features
- The exterior will retain the iconic “Exosphere” design known from the Las Vegas location.
- The venue will boast what is being touted as “the world’s highest-resolution LED screen” for its interior theater.
Location and Impact
Located near the Potomac River, the Sphere will be adjacent to the existing MGM Grand casino and other local attractions. This venue is anticipated to become a significant draw for visitors, alongside existing features like The Capital Wheel.
James Dolan, the executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, emphasized the company’s vision of creating a global network of Spheres in innovative cities. He noted the potential for the National Harbor Sphere to enhance immersive experiences for both residents and visitors.
Statements from Officials
Governor Wes Moore expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This will be one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George’s County history.” He believes the Sphere will showcase Maryland’s potential as a prime destination for entertainment.
Both local and state officials recognize the Sphere’s potential benefits, from job creation to enhancing the area’s entertainment offerings. “Helping to bring this cutting-edge project to life aligns with Maryland’s long-standing tradition of world-class entertainment,” added Governor Moore.
Looking Ahead
The National Harbor Sphere is the third venue of its kind, following the established space in Las Vegas and another currently under development in Abu Dhabi. With growing anticipation, the Maryland Sphere aims to replicate the successful strategy of its predecessors while catering to a slightly smaller audience.
