The city of Gary, Indiana, is making a strong push to host the Chicago Bears. Gary has proposed three potential sites for a new stadium, aiming to attract the NFL franchise back to the region. Mayor Eddie Melton emphasized the city’s readiness to provide the Bears with tax stability and infrastructure support.

Proposed Stadium Locations

The Gary Stadium Authority has identified three locations that they believe are ideal for the Bears’ new stadium. These sites are referred to as “Plug-and-Play sites” due to their readiness for immediate development. The proposed sites are:

• Gary West End Entertainment District: Located near the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, this area is Indiana’s highest-grossing gaming location, providing a synergy with existing entertainment venues.
• Buffington Harbor: This site presents a waterfront opportunity similar to Soldier Field. It is noted for its established infrastructure and accessibility to various transportation options.
• Miller Beach: Adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park, this location attracts around three million visitors annually, promising a unique stadium experience that stands out in the NFL.

Support for the Proposal

Gary’s proposal comes at a time when the NFL, particularly Commissioner Roger Goodell, is exploring potential stadium sites in Northwest Indiana. Discussions on public funding for infrastructure improvements continue, as the Bears aim to avoid Illinois taxpayer money for the stadium itself.

In contrast, Arlington Heights and state leaders are advocating for a Mega Project Bill to support large-scale developments, including a new Bears stadium at Arlington Park. However, Gary Mayor Melton believes that the advantages of Gary—such as proximity to downtown Chicago, local support from various government levels, and stunning views of the Chicago skyline—set it apart.
