Canada Voices Concern Over Trump’s Greenland Tariff Threats, PM Carney States

Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed Canada’s concerns regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalating tariff threats. During a press briefing in Doha, Qatar, Carney underscored Canada’s commitment to the sovereignty of nations, emphasizing that decisions regarding Greenland should rest with its people and Denmark.

Trump’s Tariff Threats and International Response

Trump announced potential tariffs of 10% on Denmark and seven other nations, which could soar to 25% on June 1 if an agreement to purchase Greenland is not reached. The affected countries, including Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, showed unity in opposing the U.S. stance. They stated that military acquisition threats could jeopardize NATO’s cohesion.

  • Initial tariff: 10%
  • Potential increase: 25% by June 1
  • Countries affected: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Finland

In a collective statement, the European countries affirmed their support for Greenland and emphasized the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. They warned that tariff threats could harm transatlantic relations and lead to a destructive spiral.

Canada’s Position and Military Readiness

General Jennie Carignan, Chief of Defence Staff, noted that Trump’s interests in Greenland have prompted discussions within NATO. She expressed optimism about navigating the challenges ahead with allied cooperation. Meanwhile, Denmark is enhancing its military presence in Greenland along with NATO allies.

When asked if Canadian forces would be deployed, Carignan confirmed continual collaboration with Denmark on Arctic security.

Broader Diplomatic Engagements

In addition to the Greenland situation, Carney also discussed an invitation from Trump to join the “Board of Peace” overseeing governance in Gaza. Though Canada has not been asked for funding, Carney plans to accept the invitation, believing it crucial to participate in shaping the governance process.

Economic Developments with Qatar

During the press conference, Carney highlighted Qatar’s commitment to strategic investments in major Canadian projects. These investments aim to accelerate project completion, invigorate the energy sector, and create jobs. The two countries plan to strengthen cultural ties and expand direct flights to enhance tourism and business relations.

Carney concluded his trip, which aimed to finalize the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar, by announcing plans to increase defence collaboration with a new attaché in Doha.
