Calgary Advances Restoration of Bearspaw Feeder Main Use
The City of Calgary is making significant strides in restoring the Bearspaw Feeder Main. The final pump to reactivate this vital water supply is set to be turned on Friday morning. Following a successful stabilization period of 24 hours, plans to lift the existing water restrictions may commence.
Progress on Bearspaw Feeder Main Restoration
Michael Thompson, the general manager of Calgary’s Infrastructure Services, stated that the city is proceeding with caution as water flow is gradually increased into the feeder main. He emphasized that the process of returning the Bearspaw south feeder main to operation involves multiple stages, and they have successfully completed two phases.
Impact of the Break
The rupture of the Bearspaw Feeder Main has been a significant disruption since it occurred 17 days ago. This feeder main typically supplies approximately 60% of the city’s drinking water. Due to the break, Calgary has had to rely heavily on the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant, which has been providing three times its usual amount of water.
On Wednesday, Calgarians consumed 501 million liters of water, exceeding the city’s target of 485 million liters, which is deemed sustainable for the Glenmore Reservoir’s long-term capacity.
Call for Continued Conservation
Calgary Emergency Management Chief Sue Henry urged residents to maintain water conservation efforts. She stressed that every action taken to reduce water consumption positively impacts the Glenmore Reservoir, especially as winter approaches.
Increased Safety Measures
As restoration efforts continue, the City of Calgary warns residents near the feeder main break to expect a heightened presence of city personnel. This includes city workers, firefighters, police officers, and utility workers, who will remain vigilant for any potential issues as the feeder main is brought back online.
