New Orleans Snow Forecast: Possible But Unlikely, Say Local Experts
As the winter season progresses, New Orleans finds itself staring down the possibility of snow once again. However, local meteorologists are tempering expectations for significant snowfall this weekend.
Snow Forecast for New Orleans: Experts Weigh In
Last January, the city experienced a remarkable event with ten inches of snow, forcing closures of schools and businesses. Residents took to the streets to enjoy the rare winter spectacle.
Now, a new winter system is approaching, but meteorologists, including Zack Fradella from WVUE-TV, caution that this weekend’s forecast is shaping up to be disappointing.
Weather Predictions
The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that the likelihood of significant snow accumulating in New Orleans is low. Kevin Gilmore, an NWS forecaster, emphasized that the outcome largely depends on where moisture from an incoming cold front settles.
- The cold front is expected to move through southeast Louisiana on Saturday.
- Potential precipitation may start as rain and could transition to wet snow overnight into Sunday morning.
- Temperatures are anticipated to drop to near freezing overnight.
Impact Areas
If snow does occur, it is likely to be concentrated in regions east of Interstate 55 and across coastal Mississippi. The chances for snowfall diminish significantly farther west and south.
Despite these chances, Gilmore mentioned that the moisture might move into the Gulf, leaving New Orleans dry but still chilly. Overnight lows are predicted to be just below freezing in the northshore area and in the mid-30s in New Orleans.
Precautions and Considerations
Residents should protect pets and sensitive plants during this cold stretch. However, a severe freeze that could endanger plumbing is not expected this time.
Gilmore advises the public to remain alert, as even minor snowfall can disrupt daily life in this region. He suggests staying tuned for updates, given the uncertainty surrounding the storm’s path and impact.
