Worc Studio Designs Circular Stone Table for Revered Mexico City Restaurant
Worc Studio, a design firm based in Mexico City and Madrid, has unveiled its latest project: a circular stone table for Savvia, a new restaurant located in the historic Centro Histórico region of Mexico City. This 153-square-meter (1,646-square-foot) establishment occupies a mid-20th-century building known as Humboldt.

The design integrates a communal aspect, reflecting family traditions and shared experiences. The centerpiece is a large red stone table, described by Worc Studio as both sculptural and symbolic. This table fosters interaction and storytelling among patrons.
Architectural Inspiration
Worc Studio’s design philosophy emphasizes the “act of sharing,” informed by familial food traditions. The firm’s co-founders, Ricardo Martínez and Camila Ureña, noted that the architecture allows guests to connect through food across generations.
Adaptive Reuse in Historical Context
- Location: Humboldt building, Centro Histórico, Mexico City
- Size: 153 square meters (1,646 square feet)
- Focus: Community and interaction through dining
- Design Elements: Exposed concrete, tactile materials
The restaurant’s ground floor extends to the street, welcoming the city’s vibrancy. The large opening invites natural light and city sounds, creating a dialogue between the intimacy of the restaurant and the energy of the surrounding area.
Interior Design Choices
The elevated kitchen design removes barriers, enhancing visibility and movement. This innovative approach inverts traditional restaurant layouts. The materials chosen—stone, brass, and wood—enhance the atmosphere, creating a sense of containment and hospitality.
- Vertical Elements: Stone
- Lighting: Metal fixtures and details in brass
- Additional Materials: Wood and stoneware for intimacy
Worc Studio faced challenges in blending modern needs with the existing structure’s historical context. Each design choice was executed with care, ensuring that their interventions complemented the building’s narrative rather than overpowering it.
Recognition and Future Prospects
Founded in 2022, Worc Studio has previously completed projects that showcase unique concepts, including two boba tea shops in Mexico City. The firm continues to explore innovative design solutions that foster community and celebrate local culture.
