Time Out Market Shutters in Fulton Market

Time Out Market in Fulton Market will officially close on January 23, 2024, marking the end of its seven-year presence in the area. The parent company, Time Out, which specializes in restaurant and entertainment news, announced this closure.

Closure Details

Time Out Market opened its doors in Fulton Market in 2019, striving to showcase Chicago’s vibrant food and drink scene. The market allowed patrons to order from multiple local restaurants in a communal setting. Over the years, it hosted various events, including live DJs and family storytime sessions. At the time of its closure, the food hall featured 17 different vendors.

Reasons for Closure

Michael Marley, CEO of Time Out Market, explained that declining foot traffic, a consequence of the pandemic and a shift to hybrid work models, played a significant role in the decision. He also noted rising operating costs as a contributing factor.

In Marley’s statement, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Chicago, praising the city’s remarkable culinary and cultural landscape. He thanked the dedicated team, chefs, and restaurateurs who created a welcoming environment for guests.

Vendor Impact

Jesse Li, owner of Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings, was surprised to learn about the closure. He has operated within Time Out Market since the summer of 2022. Li highlighted that reduced foot traffic, attributed to remote work, had already affected business performance. His contract had approximately six months remaining.

Remaining Locations and Future Outlook

The closure of Time Out Market in Fulton Market is part of a broader trend. The company is shutting its Boston location, leaving markets only in New York City and Brooklyn operating in the United States. Globally, Time Out maintains markets in cities such as:

  • Montreal
  • Dubai
  • Cape Town
  • Porto
  • Barcelona
  • Bahrain
  • Osaka
  • Budapest

Time Out has plans for four additional markets, slated to open in 2026 in locations including Vancouver, Abu Dhabi, Prague, and Riyadh. While the future of existing markets remains uncertain, the Time Out Chicago website will continue its operations.
