Egypt Launches Major Blueberry Cultivation in Wadi El-Natrun

Egypt is set to make a significant entry into the global blueberry market with the launch of a major cultivation initiative in Wadi El-Natrun. Cairo 3A for Agriculture has unveiled the first phase of this commercial blueberry farming project, marking a pivotal investment in the country’s agricultural diversification efforts.

Investment Details and Project Scope

The initial stage of this ambitious project involves an investment of EGP 442.2 million, equivalent to approximately €12 million. The broader strategy aims at diversifying towards higher value, export-oriented crops.

Location and Climate Advantages

Wadi El-Natrun is located around 100 kilometers northwest of Cairo, in the Nile Delta region. This area is known for its fertile soil, effective irrigation systems, and a favorable climate that supports fruit cultivation.

Project Phases and Production Goals

  • The project will unfold in three phases, with a total investment exceeding EGP 1.7 billion (€47.3 million).
  • – Phase 1: 63 hectares in 2025
  • – Phase 2: 84 hectares in 2026
  • – Phase 3: 84 hectares in 2027

Once fully operational, the project is expected to yield an annual production capacity of around 8,000 tons. The anticipated annual revenue could reach up to €68.8 million.

Modern Agricultural Practices

The cultivation process will prioritize careful varietal selection and modern farming techniques to meet international market standards. Ali El Gameel, CEO of the Horticulture Sector at Cairo 3A, highlights that this initiative reflects the group’s commitment to expansion and focus on export markets.

Market Orientation and Quality Standards

The blueberries will primarily target markets in the European Union and the United Kingdom, known for their strict quality demands and compliance regulations. Cairo 3A aims to enhance Egypt’s currently minimal presence in the global fresh blueberry market by supplying consistent, high-quality products.

Collaboration with International Partners

The project will be executed in partnership with international entities, including Berry World, which is engaged in plant breeding, and Agriventure, responsible for marketing efforts. This collaboration is crucial for positioning the blueberries in competitive international markets.

In summary, this blueberry cultivation initiative is not just an agricultural project; it’s a strategic move to bolster Egypt’s export capabilities and diversify its agricultural landscape. With continued investments in agro-infrastructure and international partnerships, Cairo 3A aims to ensure the sustainability of this endeavor and the broader horticultural sector in Egypt.
