Winnipeg’s historic ManWin Hotel, which has stood for 144 years, caught fire early Wednesday morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene around 4 a.m. to combat the flames engulfing the vacant two-storey building on Main Street. By 6:30 a.m., parts of the structure had collapsed.

Road Closures
In light of the emergency, Main Street was closed to both northbound and southbound traffic between Disraeli Freeway and Higgins Avenue. Additionally, Logan Avenue was closed in both directions from King Street to Disraeli as part of the safety protocols.
Background of the ManWin Hotel
The ManWin Hotel had been unoccupied for over a year before the fire. Previously, it served as a long-term residence for numerous individuals. However, it became a focal point for city inspections due to frequent health hazard reports and had been temporarily closed on several occasions. Over the last decade, the hotel was associated with several homicides.
City Orders and Historical Significance
In January 2025, city officials mandated the permanent closure of the hotel due to severe issues relating to electrical, structural, and fire safety. The hotel is in proximity to the Main Street Project, which provides vital services for individuals facing homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges.
The building, originally known as the Walker House when it first opened in 1882, later underwent several name changes, including the Britannia Hotel and the Maple Leaf Hotel, before becoming the ManWin Hotel.
