UK Launches First ‘Town of Culture’ Contest for Unique Stories
The UK has launched the first-ever ‘Town of Culture’ contest, set to recognize the unique stories of its towns. This initiative aims to complement the existing UK City of Culture program, with applications currently open for the 2029 edition. Notably, Bradford was awarded the title for 2025.
Government Initiative and Ambitions
This contest aligns with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s goal to restore pride in every community across Britain. Towns are encouraged to submit their bids, highlighting what makes them unique and valuable.
Funding and Selection Process
- Each shortlisted town will receive £60,000 in funding.
- The strongest candidates will progress to a final shortlist.
Sir Phil Redmond will lead the selection panel for the inaugural UK Town of Culture in 2028. In a recent statement, he emphasized the importance of local culture and community spirit. He posed key questions: What distinguishes your town? What instills pride in its residents? Why should it be celebrated?
Pride in Place Programme
This initiative follows the government’s Pride in Place Programme launched in November 2025. As part of this program, Labour committed funding of up to £10 billion directed toward 244 towns across the UK. The aim is to enhance the cultural fabric and community pride throughout the country.
Communities are encouraged to participate and showcase their individuality through this exciting opportunity. This contest not only aims to celebrate local heritage but also to foster a greater sense of belonging and civic pride among residents.
