“West End Welcomes ‘John Proctor is the Villain’ Next Year”

Kimberly Belflower’s play John Proctor is the Villain will move to London’s West End after its run at the Royal Court Theatre. Producers confirmed the transfer alongside details of the venue and dates.

Transfer plans and schedule

The production will play a strictly limited 12-week season at Wyndham’s Theatre. Performances run from 2 February to 24 April 2027. The Royal Court engagement continues at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs until 25 April.

The current Royal Court run is part of the venue’s 70th anniversary season. Tickets for that run have sold out.

Creative team and production history

Danya Taymor directs the staging. Taymor reassembled the original Broadway creative team for this production. Belflower’s work responds directly to Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

The Royal Court first presented The Crucible in London during its inaugural season in 1956. That historical link adds resonance to this transfer.

Cast

The Royal Court cast is led by Sadie Soverall as Shelby Holcomb and Dónal Finn as Mr Smith. The ensemble also includes Lauryn Ajufo, Charlie Borg, Reece Braddock, Holly Howden Gilchrist, Clare Hughes, Miya James and Molly McFadden.

Full casting for the Wyndham’s Theatre season has yet to be confirmed.

Critical reception and awards

Critics have praised the production during its UK debut. WhatsOnStage reviewer Sarah Crompton awarded it five stars and highlighted its emotional and artistic range.

The play previously ran on Broadway at the Booth Theatre. It earned seven Tony Award nominations in 2025, including Best Play and Best Actress in a Play for Sadie Sink.

Creative response

Belflower and Taymor said they were delighted to bring the work to London audiences. They described the move as an honour and expressed gratitude that more people will be able to see the piece at Wyndham’s Theatre in 2027.
