Gio Ruggiero Triumphs in ARCA Kansas Race After Dystany Spurlock Clash
Gio Ruggiero took the checkered flag in Saturday’s ARCA event at Kansas Speedway after late contact brought out a caution. The decisive moment came when Ruggiero made contact with Dystany Spurlock while lapping her.
Jack Wood had looked poised to win before the incident. Ruggiero had been running third with only a few laps left.
Late-race incident and restart
Spurlock, making her national ARCA debut, spun sideways after the contact. She regained control on the apron, but the spin produced a caution.
On the restart, Ruggiero moved three-wide to overtake Wood and seized the lead. Wood later lost position after being turned on the backstretch following contact with Gavan Boschele.
Ruggiero then held off Daniel Dye in overtime to secure the victory for Joe Gibbs Racing. Dye was making his first ARCA start since serving a suspension for insensitive comments.
Reactions and controversy
Ruggiero said he had to be aggressive while working lapped traffic. He acknowledged struggling with a loose car balance and that he misjudged the situation with Spurlock.
The sequence that produced the restart drew scrutiny from teams and fans. The contact that led to the yellow was central to post-race discussion.
