Explore Malvern’s Stunning Outdoors Today!

Spring has arrived and longer days invite fresh air and movement. Explore Malvern on foot to take in panoramic ridgelines and woodlands. The area’s stunning outdoors reward walkers of every pace.

Victorian spa heritage and the Malvern Hills

Great Malvern earned fame during the Victorian nature cure movement. Wealthy visitors came for hydrotherapy, fresh air and simple diets.

Malvern Spring Water attracted figures such as Florence Nightingale, Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin. The Malvhina Fountain still offers samples today.

Local events and traditions

The Malvern Wall Dressing and Water Festival takes place around the early May Bank Holiday. The festival celebrates the town’s water heritage and communal spirit.

The Cottage in the Wood: setting and standards

The Cottage in the Wood sits above Great Malvern in eight acres of woodland. The four-star property feels like a hotel on a hill with wide countryside views.

The hotel has won Restaurant of the Year twice at the Taste of Worcestershire Awards. It also holds 3 AA rosettes for culinary quality.

New dining format and Michelin recognition

In spring 2025 the property split its dining into two venues. The 1919 Restaurant and The Brasserie now operate alongside each other.

The 1919 Restaurant was listed in the 2026 Michelin Guide. Inspectors praised the terrace and panoramic views from the dining room.

Head chef Mark Potts leads a seven-course tasting menu. The kitchen emphasises seasonal, proudly British cooking.

  • Sample starters included smoked eel with Granny Smith custard.
  • Main courses featured salt-baked beetroot and baked cod with scallop chowder.
  • Other dishes ranged from honey-glazed duck to gnocchi with celeriac.
  • Desserts included a rose geranium, lychee and coconut pre-dessert and chocolate délice.

Wines served during tasting included Pierre Mignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, Carignan and Monbazillac. Meals are paired for balance and flavour.

Breakfasts range from a full English to homemade granola. Three-course lunches and afternoon teas are available with attentive service.

Bars, rooms and countryside access

The property features a cosy Lounge Bar and The Terrace. Both offer sweeping views over the Severn Valley and the Cotswolds.

There are 32 individually styled bedrooms across the Main House, Beech Cottage and The Coach House. Categories run from Cosy to Best, with Bramley toiletries and fresh arrival cookies.

Many rooms face the Severn Valley and Vale of Evesham. Views of the Cotswolds are common from higher rooms.

Walking and pet-friendly options

A 30-minute walk behind the main house leads to eastern slopes. The route climbs between Perseverance and Jubilee Hill on the Malvern Hills.

Select rooms in The Coach House welcome dogs. This makes the hotel convenient for walkers with pets.
