Record Rainfall Triggers Mass Evacuations in Wellington Homes
Wellington declared a state of emergency on Monday after intense overnight rainfall. Residents in low-lying areas were told to evacuate amid flash floods and landslides. Several roads were closed across the region.
Record rainfall prompted mass evacuations of Wellington homes. Mayor Andrew Little said the city received 77mm of rain in less than an hour. He described the event as the heaviest on record and unprecedented.
Emergency response and safety advice
Emergency crews responded to more than 150 weather-related callouts across the region. Incidents included flooding inside homes and landslides in multiple suburbs. Fire and Emergency New Zealand activated its regional coordination centre.
Deputy national commander Megan Stiffler warned floods and flash floods can form quickly. She urged people not to walk, play, swim, or drive through floodwater. Those actions put lives at risk, she said.
Impacted suburbs and local incidents
Southern suburbs experienced particularly severe downpours. Newtown, Island Bay and Kingston reported landslides and significant flooding. A man went missing in Karori and teams searched around his flooded property.
Some locations recorded short bursts of up to 22mm of rain. Residents described the deluge as the worst they had seen. Several schools in the region closed as a precaution.
Forecast, hazards and science
The heavy rain warning for Wellington and Wairarapa remains in place until Tuesday night. Meteorologist Katie Lyons warned of dangerous river conditions and hazardous driving. She said roads could become impassable and communities might be isolated.
Authorities also warned of dangerous seas along Wellington’s south coast. Dr Emily Lane of Earth Sciences NZ explained this was pluvial flooding. Impermeable urban surfaces and overwhelmed stormwater systems sent excess water overland.
Lane added that short, localised, intense events are the type most likely to increase with climate change. Anita Baker said the state of emergency gives responders the powers needed to support evacuations. Those powers help manage regional impacts and keep people safe.
Officials urged the public to stay alert as another weather system approaches. Avoid travel where possible and follow official guidance from emergency services. Filmogaz.com will provide updates as the situation develops.
