Pirates Update: Cam Sanders Recalled, Urquidy Demoted
The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled right-hander Cam Sanders from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned José Urquidy to the minors. Filmogaz.com confirmed the roster move opened a spot on the big-league active list.
In our latest Pirates Update: Cam Sanders Recalled, Urquidy Demoted, the club cited performance and role needs as factors. Manager Don Kelly outlined the plan for both pitchers.
Cam Sanders: recent form
Sanders, a right-handed reliever, made his major-league debut with Pittsburgh last season. He appeared in six games out of the bullpen, allowing six runs over 6.2 innings.
Five of those runs came during a single outing against the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 10 at PNC Park. At Triple-A Indianapolis this year, Sanders made seven appearances.
He posted a 3.00 ERA in Indianapolis. Sanders recorded 11 strikeouts and issued seven walks across six innings.
José Urquidy: demotion and role change
Urquidy struggled in his brief big-league stint this season. He is 0-1 with an 8.43 ERA and one save in five appearances for the Pirates.
He allowed 15 hits in 6.1 innings, walked two batters and struck out six. The club optioned him to Indianapolis to convert him back into a starter.
Manager’s plan
Don Kelly said the organization will stretch Urquidy out as a starting pitcher at Triple-A. The goal is to rebuild his workload and refine his arsenal.
| Pitcher | MLB appearances (this season) | ERA (MLB) | Triple-A form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cam Sanders | 6 (debut season) | — (6 runs in 6.2 IP last year) | 7 apps, 3.00 ERA, 11 K, 7 BB in 6 IP |
| José Urquidy | 5 | 8.43 | Optioned to Indy to be stretched out |
The move gives the Pirates a fresh bullpen option while prioritizing Urquidy’s long-term role. The club will monitor both pitchers’ progress closely.
