Nebraska closed out a dramatic upset over Creighton and now turns its attention to a three-game series with No. 12 USC. The upset win came at Haymarket Park and secured the season series against Creighton. The series with USC carries Big Ten and postseason seeding implications.

Recap: Rally at Haymarket

Creighton struck early in the I-80 rivalry game. Nate McHugh launched a two-run homer to left in the opening frame. A sacrifice fly by Teddy Deters added another run and chased starter Pryce Bender after one inning.

Nebraska climbed back after an early 4-0 deficit. True freshman Drew Grego hit his fifth homer in the second inning and drove in two runs. He added a run-scoring single later to finish with three RBIs.

Joshua Overbeek and Rhett Stokes each produced RBI singles to complete a five-run comeback. Lefty Caleb Clark tossed a scoreless frame. Ty Horn worked three strong innings from the bullpen, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts.

J’Shawn Unger closed out the game with two innings for the save. Head coach Will Bolt indicated Horn will remain in the bullpen for the rest of the year. The 5-4 victory gave Nebraska a series win over Creighton for the first time since 2017.

USC scouting report

Andy Stankiewicz is in his fourth season as USC head coach. The Trojans sit at 30-8 this year and have their best start under him. USC ranks near the top of the conference in team ERA at 3.39.

Left-hander Mason Edwards anchors the staff. He has an extremely low ERA and about 95 strikeouts in roughly 49 innings. Grant Govel has been strong in the Saturday rotation with a 2.13 ERA this season.

Adam Troy has handled closing duties after transferring from Pepperdine. He has recorded 10 saves with a 3.92 ERA. Other bullpen pieces include Gavin Lauridsen and Henry Chabot, who have provided quality innings.

Offensively, Kevin Takeuchi leads the Trojans at a .312 clip. Augie Lopez is the club’s power threat with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. Jack Basseer joins Takeuchi as one of two hitters over .300 this season.

USC’s approach emphasizes contact and walks. The team ranks among the conference leaders in walks and avoids strikeouts. Still, Nebraska outpaces USC in hits and runs by sizeable margins this year.

Series history and outlook

USC leads the all-time series 4-3. Nebraska won the early matchups in 1979 and 1984. The Trojans have taken four of the last five meetings, beginning in 2005.

Last season, USC won two of three games in Los Angeles. This weekend will be a true test for both pitching staffs. The outcome may affect postseason seeding for each club.

This matchup projects as a three-game grind at Haymarket. Filmogaz.com’s Preview and Breakdown leans toward a competitive series. The outlook favors Nebraska to take two of three contests.
