Cubs’ Cade Horton Faces Major Elbow Surgery, Out Up to 16 Months
The Chicago Cubs announced that right-hander Cade Horton underwent major right elbow surgery and could miss as much as 16 months. Manager Craig Counsell said the team expects a lengthy recovery and will manage expectations day by day.
Surgery details and medical team
Dr. Keith Meister, who serves as the Texas Rangers’ head team physician, performed the procedure on Thursday. The operation included a revision of the ulnar collateral ligament, repair of the flexor muscle, and internal bracing.
The club called the work a significant intervention. Recovery timelines remain conservative given the scope of the repairs.
Horton’s background and recent performance
Horton is 24 years old and entered pro baseball having already undergone Tommy John surgery. The Cubs selected him with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 draft out of Oklahoma.
He helped Oklahoma reach the College World Series. Last season, Horton posted an 11-4 record and a 2.67 ERA, finishing second in National League Rookie of the Year voting.
When the injury occurred
Horton left his April 3 road start against the Cleveland Guardians after throwing 15 pitches. The exit came without warning and immediately raised concerns.
In the following days, Chicago’s pitching staff suffered additional setbacks that strained depth across the rotation.
Roster adjustments and short-term moves
Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd is currently on the injured list with a left biceps strain. Boyd completed a rehab outing with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday without complications.
The Cubs plan to activate Boyd next week. They intend to have him start during the upcoming series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.
Clubhouse response
Players and coaches say they will adapt during Horton’s absence. Teammates describe Horton as mentally strong and determined to follow a clear rehabilitation plan.
Outlook and timeline
Counsell cautioned that projecting the timetable too far ahead is not helpful. The team prefers to focus on daily progress and measurable goals.
A best-case scenario would see Horton pitching for Chicago in the summer of 2027. Teammates expect him to return as a frontline starter.
