Steve McNamara Named Hull FC Head Coach Starting 2027
An agreement between Hull FC and Warrington Wolves will see Steve McNamara move to Hull as Head Coach starting in 2027. Hull has paid a substantial transfer fee to secure his services. Both clubs say they will manage the handover carefully.
Transition plan
McNamara will remain as Warrington’s assistant coach through the rest of the 2026 campaign. He will take up his post at the MKM Stadium after that season finishes. Hull and Warrington will coordinate to ensure a smooth changeover.
Immediate coaching changes at Hull
John Cartwright has stepped away from day-to-day head coaching duties with immediate effect. He remains employed by the club while Hull acknowledges his efforts during his tenure. Assistant coach Andy Last will act as interim head coach until the end of the 2026 Betfred Super League season.
Playing background
McNamara is returning to his boyhood club. He progressed through Hull’s youth ranks and made more than 160 senior appearances from 1989 to 1996. His playing career also included representation for England and Great Britain.
Coaching résumé
He brings more than two decades of coaching experience at domestic and international levels. His roles include spells with Bradford Bulls and Catalans Dragons, plus the England international side. He has also worked in the NRL as an assistant with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors.
Catalans achievements
At Catalans, McNamara oversaw the club’s most successful period. That run included a Challenge Cup triumph, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances.
Responses from the clubs
Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler described the appointment as significant for the club and city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill said McNamara’s experience and standards make him the right leader for the next phase. Warrington chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick thanked McNamara for his contribution and wished him success in his new role.
