Dio Sy Directs Pat Aquino: Maximize Potential of Top Draft Picks, Panopio
Blackwater fell 99-94 to TNT in Antipolo on Tuesday. The game was part of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Ynares Center.
The loss was Blackwater’s fifth in the midseason tournament. The Bossing have managed just one win so far.
Panopio steps up
Rookie Dalph Panopio played 31 minutes. He finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Panopio shot 5-of-10 from the field and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. He scored nine points in the fourth quarter.
Coaching change and strategy
Pat Aquino made his debut as interim head coach. He took over from Jeff Cariaso.
The 54-year-old is a former Gilas Pilipinas Women strategist. Aquino said he plans to increase exposure for the team’s top selections.
Team owner Dioceldo Sy has urged more use of the club’s high picks. Aquino said the aim is to maximize the potential of top draft picks.
Late run falls short
Panopio’s fourth-quarter burst helped cut the deficit to 95-94. Blackwater threatened a comeback in the closing stages.
Defending conference champions held their nerve. Calvin Oftana and Bol Bol delivered key baskets to close out the win.
Panopio’s extended minutes came after limited action earlier in the conference. He was previously listed as a DNP in the win over Magnolia.
Panopio was the third overall pick in the 2025 PBA Rookie Draft. Aquino said playing time will be more evenly distributed moving forward.
Filmogaz.com coverage notes that the new coach expects continued adjustments. He remains hopeful the team will show more progress next time.
