Brisbane Commuters Experience Rail Bus Delays
Brisbane commuters have faced significant delays due to ongoing rail closures and inadequate bus replacement services. Since April 10, a combination of major track works and industrial disputes has hindered the city’s rail network, leaving many passengers frustrated.
Rail Bus Delays in Brisbane: Current Situation
This week, bus services replaced trains at several key routes, including:
- Northgate to Bowen Hills
- Boggo Road to Varsity Lakes
One commuter, Joanne McCarthy, reported that her journey from Caboolture to Roma Street, typically taking one hour, extended to two and a half hours. She expressed her frustration after being forced off the train at Geebung, where she found hundreds of passengers queued for bus replacements without any prior communication of delays.
Long Waits and Frustration
Others shared similar experiences. Commuters voiced their concerns after waiting:
- 40 minutes at Eagle Junction station
- 90 minutes to reach their destination instead of the usual 35 minutes
Many passengers at Geebung reported a lack of buses, with one noting over 100 people waiting for transportation to the CBD. A resident of Nudgee also highlighted that only a few riders boarded buses meant for Helensvale, leaving hundreds still in line for city-bound travel.
Issues with Rail Replacement Services
Imogen Buckley, founder of the South East Queensland Transport Association, criticized the situation, stating that while similar disruptions have occurred in the past, the current delays are made worse by the fuel crisis. She emphasized the urgent need for more frequent replacement bus services to alleviate congestion at platforms.
A Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson indicated efforts to monitor service levels closely and explore options for increasing bus capacity in response to high demand. They are actively working with partners to enhance rail replacement services.
Upcoming Closures and Political Reaction
Track closures initially scheduled from April 3 to April 26 have now been extended to April 30. Queensland Rail stated this extension is due to protected industrial action by unions, impacting the completion timeline of critical rail works. Despite the planned nature of these closures, political figures have raised concerns. Treasurer David Janetzki attributed the disruptions to union actions, while Labor’s Shannon Fentiman criticized the government for the mismanagement of transport services.
As Brisbane commuters continue to face these rail bus delays, the public transport system’s reliability remains in question, calling for better infrastructure and operational planning.
