Husband Faces Charges Amid American Woman’s Disappearance in Bahamas
Authorities in the Bahamas have detained a man after his wife vanished from their sailboat more than a week ago. His lawyer says investigators appear to be probing a possible homicide case.
Arrest and legal status
The Royal Bahamas Police Force arrested 58-year-old Brian Hooker on Wednesday. He has not been formally charged and denies any wrongdoing.
Attorney Terrel Butler told reporters that questioning points toward a potential murder charge. Police must either file charges or release Hooker by 7:20 p.m. on Monday, Butler said.
Officials said Hooker was hurt during transport to a station. He suffered knee pain and abrasions and received hospital treatment.
Account of the incident
Brian Hooker says his 55-year-old wife, Lynette Hooker, fell overboard on April 4. They were sailing from Hope Town to Elbow Cay at the time.
He told investigators Lynette had the boat keys, which stopped the engine. Strong currents then swept her away, he said.
Hooker described paddling ashore after losing sight of her. He shared maps with friends showing a disappearance spot in shallow water. The maps place the location in less than 10 feet of water at high tide.
Movements before the disappearance
The couple anchored their sailboat, Soulmate, in Aunt Pat’s Bay. They then took a dinghy to Tahiti Beach and later headed toward the Abaco Inn near Hope Town.
Hooker reportedly relayed the sequence of events during a phone call with friends Marnee and Blaine Stevenson.
Previous allegations and background
A 2015 police report from Kentwood, Michigan documents an earlier dispute between the pair. Both spouses accused each other of assault in that incident.
Authorities at the time described Brian Hooker as intoxicated and with a bleeding nose. Lynette was arrested initially, but a warrant was later denied due to insufficient evidence.
Family comments and search efforts
Daughter Karli Aylesworth said the couple often fought, especially when drinking. She told reporters she doubts her mother would simply fall overboard.
Brian Hooker posted on Facebook on April 8, calling the event a tragic boating accident. He wrote that winds and currents separated them and that finding Lynette remained his sole focus.
Ongoing investigation
The case has attracted intense attention as investigators continue to probe the circumstances. Media outlets report police are exploring whether the husband faces charges related to the American woman’s disappearance in the Bahamas.
