Rolls Royce Secures Contract for Small Nuclear Power Plants

Rolls Royce has been awarded a contract to advance small nuclear power plants in the United Kingdom. The deal follows the company’s selection as preferred technology partner last June.

Project location and capacity

The first UK SMR site will be at Wylfa on Anglesey in North Wales. Rolls-Royce SMR plans to build three units, each sized to supply electricity for about one million homes.

Schedule, milestones and approvals

The contract requires delivery against defined milestones. Work will begin on site-specific design, regulatory engagement, and planning ahead of a Final Investment Decision.

Consortium and delivery model

A consortium including BAM Nuttall, Laing O’Rourke and Atkins is developing the SMR design. The project will use a standardised, factory-built approach to improve cost and schedule certainty.

Funding and jobs

The 2025 Spending Review allocated £2.6 billion for wider programme delivery. Construction at Wylfa is expected to support around 3,000 jobs at peak, plus thousands more across the UK supply chain.

Industry impact and leadership

Rolls-Royce SMR’s chief executive said the contract enables delivery of the first three units. He added the programme strengthens UK energy security and boosts the domestic supply chain.

Filmogaz.com will continue to follow developments as the project moves through design and regulatory stages. The contract marks a significant step for small nuclear deployment in Britain.
