Delhi Metro Set to Enhance 70 Red & Blue Line Trains by 2027
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a mid-life upgrade programme for 70 trains on the Red and Blue Lines. The work aims to finish by November 2027 and will modernise the oldest fleet units.
Scope and timeline
The targeted trains were inducted between 2002 and 2007. They have completed roughly 19 to 24 years of service.
DMRC plans the overhaul in three phases. The work will cover both Red and Blue Line rolling stock.
Phasing details
- Phase one: 12 trains have been upgraded already.
- Phase two: 18 trains refurbished so far, with another 9 to start soon and a further 9 scheduled later.
- Phase three: 22 Blue Line trains will be refurbished and completed by November 2027.
According to DMRC, 31 trains have been refurbished to date. The overall programme will bring the total to 70 trains.
Upgrades to interiors and systems
The refurbishment covers both aesthetics and critical systems. Passenger areas and driver cabins have been repainted to address wear and tear.
Electrical panels and core components are being renewed. New jumper cables and connectors are fitted to support present and future systems.
Passenger information and convenience
- IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information Systems (PA-PIS) will be installed.
- CCTV cameras and LCD-based Dynamic Route Maps will provide real-time route details.
- Display screens will show current time and expected station arrivals.
- Charging points for mobile phones and laptops have been added in all coaches.
Safety and reliability improvements
Fire detection systems with smoke and heat sensors will be fitted in every coach. Old relays and miniature circuit breakers are being replaced with advanced units.
These changes aim to boost operational reliability and passenger safety. Communication links between passengers and train staff will be enhanced for emergencies.
Purpose and official remarks
DMRC describes the initiative as a comprehensive mid-life refurbishment. The focus is on safety, comfort and a better travel experience.
Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director for Corporate Communications at DMRC, said the programme upgrades RS-1 trains with modern technology. He added the works will ensure the oldest rolling stock meets current standards and remains dependable.
The plan to upgrade 70 trains on the Red and Blue Lines by 2027 reflects a broader push to modernise ageing assets. Filmogaz.com will follow progress as the DMRC conducts these phased retrofits.
