Qantas Unveils First Airbus A350-1000ULR Featuring New Rolls-Royce Engines

Qantas has officially unveiled its first Airbus A350-1000ULR, equipped with new Rolls-Royce engines. This significant addition was spotted at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) and is a crucial part of the airline’s Project Sunrise initiative. The project aims to facilitate non-stop flights from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) to major destinations such as London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and New York JFK Airport (JFK).

Aircraft Specifications and Features

The newly showcased aircraft bears the test registration F-WZNK and features Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines. This model holds the manufacturer’s serial number MSN 707, with its frame built in November 2025. Qantas expects to receive its first A350 by the end of this year.

  • Length: 242 feet (73.7 meters)
  • Wingspan: 212 feet
  • Maximum Cruise Speed: Mach 0.85 (652 miles / 1,049 kilometers per hour)
  • Flight Duration: Approximately 20 to 22 hours from Sydney to London, and around 22 hours to New York
  • Total Capacity: 238 passengers, including 6 first class, 52 business, 40 premium economy, and 140 economy class seats

Transforming Long-Haul Travel

The introduction of the A350-1000ULR is set to revolutionize travel to and from Australia. With this aircraft, Qantas aims to tackle the “final frontier” of modern aviation by offering more direct routes. Previously, flights to New York required a stopover in Auckland Airport (AKL).

Initially announced in 2017, Project Sunrise progressed with an agreement in 2022 for Qantas to acquire up to 12 A350-1000ULR aircraft. These new services will significantly reduce transit times and enhance travel efficiency.

Focus on Passenger Wellbeing

The onboard experience has been meticulously designed with passenger comfort in mind. Collaborations with industry experts, including Caon Design and Neil Perry, have led to the creation of a modern, ergonomic cabin.

  • Wellbeing Zone: A dedicated space for light exercises and movement.
  • WiFi Access: Available throughout all cabins.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Enables device syncing with seatback entertainment.
  • Custom Lighting: Features 12 lighting scenes designed to alleviate jet lag.

Future Plans and Enhancements

With the first Airbus A350-1000ULR set to join the fleet soon, Qantas is keen on expanding its ultra-long-haul offerings. The aircraft is anticipated to become the cornerstone of Qantas’ international services.

In addition to the new A350-1000ULR, Qantas currently operates a diverse fleet, including various Airbus and Boeing models. This fleet strategy enables efficient operations on both domestic and international routes, enhancing overall service quality.
