Cheryl Ladd Challenges Producers in Iconic ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Bikini Moment

Cheryl Ladd, renowned for her role as Kris Munroe in “Charlie’s Angels,” made waves during filming due to her iconic bikini moments. In 1977, she joined the classic series, which ran until 1981, playing Farrah Fawcett’s younger sister. The series featured a glamorous detective agency and starred fellow actresses Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson.

Cheryl Ladd Challenges Producers

During a recent PaleyFest L.A. panel celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Charlie’s Angels,” Ladd recounted her experiences on set. She noted that producer Aaron Spelling preferred her in bikinis, which she wore frequently throughout the show. However, after a while, Ladd felt frustrated by the constant two-piece outfits.

Determined to make a statement, Ladd purchased an exceptionally small bikini for filming, fully aware it likely wouldn’t pass ABC’s stringent censors. Despite the potential backlash, she took a stand. “At first, I heard Aaron wasn’t happy,” Ladd recalled, noting that he even labeled her a “little troublemaker.”

Her daring choice, however, paid off, as the show’s ratings improved significantly. Smith humorously remarked during the panel, “Well, our ratings went up!”

Health Battles and Sisterhood

During the anniversary celebration, Ladd bravely discussed her battle with an aggressive form of breast cancer. “I had wonderful doctors,” she stated, reflecting on the challenging experience that left her bald for an extended period. Ladd emphasized the importance of support, particularly from her husband, Brian Russell, throughout her treatment.

She shared, “Eventually, I started to get little sprouts of hair, feeling hopeful.” This bond over health struggles extends to her co-stars, all of whom are cancer survivors. Smith commented on the powerful connections formed through their shared experiences.

Legacy of ‘Charlie’s Angels’

The trio honored their late co-star, Farrah Fawcett, who passed away in 2009. Reflecting on their time together, Smith expressed pride in what they achieved as a cast. She stated, “I feel we did something right, and I have no regrets.”

Ladd also opened up about the impact of fame from the show, recalling the challenges of privacy and public adoration. “It was a wild time,” she admitted, reminiscing about how their lives were transformed by the show’s success.

As the celebration of “Charlie’s Angels” continues, Ladd’s journey—from her iconic bikini moment to her courageous fight against cancer—remains an influential story of resilience and strength.
