Myanmar Coup Leader Min Aung Hlaing Assumes Presidency

Myanmar coup leader Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as president in Naypyidaw on April 10, 2026. The inauguration took place five years after he removed the elected government in 2021.

The 69-year-old general secured the presidency after a pro-military parliament voted him into office last week. He was one of three nominees, and the two other candidates became vice presidents.

Inauguration and international outreach

In his address, Min Aung Hlaing said the country was moving toward a better future while facing many challenges. He pledged to enhance international relations and to restore normal ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The ceremony drew envoys from China, India and Thailand, plus delegates from 20 other countries, according to AFP. Myanmar had been suspended from ASEAN after the 2021 coup.

Parliamentary vote and questions of legitimacy

The transition followed a lopsided parliamentary vote held in December and January. The army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party won more than 80 percent of contested seats.

Active military personnel hold unelected seats that amount to a quarter of parliament. Large areas saw no voting because rebel forces control them, undermining the claimed mandate.

Conflict, resistance and humanitarian impact

The 2021 coup triggered nationwide protests and a mass civil disobedience movement. Armed anti-coup groups and ethnic armies later joined forces against the military.

The conflict has produced a heavy human toll. The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project estimates over 96,000 deaths, while the United Nations reports at least 3.6 million people displaced since 2021.

Amnesty pledge and scepticism

Min Aung Hlaing vowed to grant amnesties to support reconciliation and to invite striking civil servants back. He also promised pardons for some political prisoners.

Observers and democracy advocates dismissed those promises as largely cosmetic. They said the measures would not address the wider crisis or restore legitimacy.
