Tumbler Ridge Shooting Survivor Maya Gebala Seeks Specialized Treatment in L.A.
Twelve-year-old Maya Gebala, a survivor of the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in February, will travel to Los Angeles for specialized rehabilitation. Her mother, Cia Edmonds, announced the move on social media after an update from Vancouver.
Medical status in Vancouver
Maya received care at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver following the shooting. Her injuries included a gunshot wound to the head.
Doctors removed her from intensive care and described her condition as seemingly stable. Edmonds has said she is grateful Maya survived the attack.
Plans for treatment in Los Angeles
Edmonds said they will pursue privatized, aggressive rehabilitation in Los Angeles. The family hopes the care team can focus on restoring function and comfort.
The move aims to create routines and supportive relationships to aid recovery. Edmonds described the relocation as the start of a new chapter.
Support and funding
Supporters have offered financial help for the out-of-country care. Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White previously offered to cover treatment costs at a top-tier California hospital.
Edmonds said the family welcomes the assistance as they arrange for specialized treatment and travel.
Family hopes and outlook
Edmonds expressed hope that Maya will find peace and love during recovery. She also voiced concern that her daughter not be confined to a body that cannot function.
The family plans to settle in L.A. briefly to begin intensive rehabilitation. Community fundraising and private care are expected to support their efforts.
