Arthur Chu’s journey began three years ago when he took a part-time job at a coffee shop while pursuing a business degree. What started as a simple role evolved into a fierce competitive spirit that changed his career path. Today, he views each cup of coffee as a canvas for his artistic expression.
Artistry in Every Cup
For Chu, creating latte art is both storytelling and precise technique. His artistry culminated in a stunning depiction of a stag, which helped him clinch the national title during a competition held in Mississauga in February. Aiming for World Championships
Chu is already planning for the upcoming world championships scheduled for 2027. He aims to showcase new designs featuring three animals: a tiger, a timber wolf, and a stag. He wants to create something truly special for the judges, emphasizing a creative edge in his presentation.
Technique and Dedication
His winning technique, known as “skate dragging,” involves fluid pouring with minimal brushing. This allows him to create intricate designs effortlessly. To maintain his competitive edge, Chu dedicates time to practice, often completing at least 50 pours on his days off, with a personal best of 150 cups in a single day.

At Markham’s Hatch Coffee Roasters, patrons eagerly seek out Chu’s award-winning creations. He enjoys engaging with customers and occasionally takes requests, although he humorously notes the challenges of busy periods. “The best part is the smile,” he says, expressing joy when customers share their experiences online.
