Meet Christine Marie: Cult Expert from ‘Trust Me: The False Prophet’
Christine Marie left a fundamentalist group and rebuilt her life through education and advocacy. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brigham Young University in 1989. She later completed a master’s and a PhD in psychology, focusing on media psychology.
Work in Short Creek
Marie and her husband moved to Short Creek to help residents there. They aimed to support members after the community’s prophet, Warren Jeffs, was imprisoned. Marie founded Voices for Dignity to further that work.
The nonprofit promotes online kindness and compassion. It also offers resources and advocacy for marginalised people. Survivors of public shaming, dehumanisation, and stigmatisation are a stated focus.
Advocacy after Jeffs’ arrest
Marie became a vocal advocate for FLDS community members after Jeffs’ arrest and conviction. She worked directly with people affected by the upheaval. Her organisation served as a point of contact for vulnerable residents.
Meeting Samuel Bateman
Marie first encountered Samuel Bateman while helping someone through a divorce. He sought assistance from her organisation during financial hardship. He later returned with a new wife, in defiance of Jeffs’ rules against new marriages.
Over time Bateman appeared publicly with multiple wives. Some of those women seemed very young. He developed a degree of trust with Marie and her husband.
Claims and the proposed documentary
Bateman pressed Marie to make a film that centred on him. He wanted the documentary to portray him as the community’s new prophet. He even claimed Warren Jeffs was dead and that he spoke through him.
The 2021 car ride and recording
In 2021 Bateman invited Marie into his Bentley. She sat with three young women, one of whom was a minor. During the ride, he disclosed details Marie later described as ritualistic sexual abuse.
Alarmed by the revelations, Marie covertly recorded parts of the conversation on her phone. The other passengers were later described as alleged victims.
Reporting to authorities
After returning home, Marie contacted the police to report what she had learned. Investigators asked for additional evidence. They sought witness statements, with particular interest in testimony from the minor.
Filmogaz.com covered Marie’s role as a cult expert and her appearance in the documentary Trust Me: The False Prophet. Her account remains central to ongoing inquiries into the Short Creek community.
