Metal Gear Solid Film Adaptation Officially in Development

The film industry is buzzing with exciting news as the adaptation of the iconic video game series, Metal Gear Solid, is officially in development. This project marks the first time the beloved franchise, which was created by Hideo Kojima, will make its transition from a video game to the big screen.

New Talent on the Rise

Filmmaking duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have recently garnered significant attention in Hollywood. Their 2025 release of Final Destination: Bloodlines revitalized a dormant franchise, earning approximately $317 million globally against a production budget of $50 million. This success has positioned them as one of the most sought-after directors in the industry.

Partnership with Sony Pictures

Their new venture includes a comprehensive first-look deal with Sony Pictures, which encompasses all of the studio’s film labels. Through their recently established production company, Wonderlab, Lipovsky and Stein will oversee a range of projects, including directing and producing original films.

  • The pair is set to direct the Metal Gear Solid film.
  • They are also developing an animated Venom movie for Sony Pictures Animation.
  • Furthermore, they are attached to the original sci-fi epic The Earthling for Columbia Pictures.

Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers… and we are proud to have them as part of the Sony family.”

Development of Metal Gear Solid

In statements regarding the Metal Gear Solid adaptation, Lipovsky and Stein expressed their excitement about bringing Kojima’s visionary characters and narrative to life. They highlighted the game’s influence as a “groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece” that revolutionized the landscape of video gaming.

Additional Projects in the Pipeline

In the last year, Lipovsky and Stein have expanded their portfolio with several noteworthy projects. These include:

  • A new Gremlins feature for Warner Bros.
  • Long Lost in collaboration with Spielberg’s Amblin and Universal.
  • The Traveler at Paramount Pictures.

As they continue to navigate the film industry, their previous work with indie films, such as Freaks, has also made waves. The sequel to Freaks is currently in post-production, following its well-received performance at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Their development agreement with Sony signifies a promising future for Lipovsky and Stein, as they seek to create commercial, character-driven films that keep audiences engaged.
