Mural tribute
The piece was painted by artist Gustavo Zermeño Jr. It has drawn local attention for its depiction of Liu on the ice.
The mural adds to public recognition of the skater. It also highlights community interest in Olympic athletes.
Global ticket launch and early demand
Ticket sales for the Los Angeles 2028 Games moved to a worldwide phase this week. Organizers reported a record-setting local presale the week before.
LA28 said the locals presale sold more tickets in its opening week than any prior Olympics. All tickets in that initial window went to residents of Los Angeles and Oklahoma City areas.
Drop 1 details and availability
The global sales phase, called “Drop 1,” runs through April 19. Fans selected by draw receive assigned time slots to purchase tickets.
Tickets are offered for a wide range of events, including the opening and closing ceremonies. Organizers warned that some low-priced seats disappeared rapidly.
Pricing structure and public reaction
Organizers marketed $28 entry-level tickets as the lowest in modern Olympic history. Hundreds of thousands of those low-cost tickets sold to local buyers.
LA28 said it will make more than one million $28 tickets available overall. Still, some buyers reported sticker shock over fees and limited availability.
- Nearly half of tickets are priced under $200.
- More than three-quarters, including finals, cost under $400.
- About 5% of tickets carry prices above $1,000.
Allison Katz-Mayfield, LA28’s senior vice president for games delivery revenue, told Filmogaz.com that the cheapest seats were expected to sell first. She added that additional low-cost inventory will appear in future sales phases.
She also said demand exceeded expectations during registration and the first sales window. At the start of the global launch, roughly a third of on-sale tickets were still priced below $200.
Financial stakes and resale warnings
The organizing committee faces pressure to stage a fiscally responsible Games. Taxpayers could be liable for cost overruns.
LA28 plans more than $7 billion in operations. Funding will come mainly from ticket sales, sponsorships, and hospitality revenue.
Organizers view strong early ticket and sponsorship income as positive for the budget. They urged buyers to avoid unofficial resale sites.
LA28 warned that secondary market listings could be speculative or invalid. Its verified resale programme will not begin until 2027.
