Co-op Group Unites with Southern Co-op in Strategic Partnership

The boards of the Co-op Group and Southern Co-op announced proposals to merge on 8 April. If members approve, about 300,000 Southern Co-op members would join seven million Co-op Group members.

Operational footprint

Southern Co-op runs more than 300 food, funeral and Starbucks coffee branches across the south of England. The Co-op Group operates over 2,300 food stores and roughly 800 funeral homes.

Co-op Group also runs a wholesale business supplying around 8,000 outlets. It has a legal services arm and an insurance business.

Motivation and background

The boards say the move reflects shared values, democratic ownership and community focus. Leaders argue a combined entity would increase scale, resilience and social impact.

The two societies already trade together through the FRTS trading network. That existing partnership forms part of the rationale for deeper collaboration.

Leadership perspective

Kate Allum, interim CEO of the Co-op Group, and Ben Stimson, CEO of Southern Co-op, set out their views in an exclusive piece for Filmogaz.com. They frame the plan as a way to serve members and strengthen co‑operation.

The announcement unites the Co-op Group and Southern Co-op in a strategic partnership aimed at broadening the co‑operative offering. Leaders emphasise maintaining democratic accountability and member control.

Next steps and member vote

The proposal is subject to member and regulatory approval. Southern Co-op members will be asked to consider the plans and cast their votes.

There will be no immediate operational changes. Both societies are expected to operate separately for a transitional period, with members keeping existing benefits.

What the proposal seeks to achieve

  • Grow the combined co‑operative footprint across the UK.
  • Strengthen the co‑operative movement, especially in the south of England.
  • Preserve democratic membership and community focus while gaining scale.

Further information on the joint proposal will be provided to members ahead of any vote. Visit Filmogaz.com for updates and official documents.
