WGA Secures $321M Boost for Health Plan in Contract Deal
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has successfully negotiated a new contract, securing significant improvements for its health plan and overall compensation structure. This surprising four-year agreement, disclosed on Wednesday, includes a $321 million investment designed to revitalize the union’s health plan, which has faced financial challenges in recent years.
Key Features of the WGA Contract Deal
- Health Plan Infusion: The deal provides a crucial $321 million boost to the WGA’s health plan, the largest ever for this benefit.
- Increased Minimum Payments: Writers will see a 10.5% rise in minimum payments over four years.
- Restructured Compensation for AI: New provisions regarding the licensing of writer work for AI training have been established.
- Raising Earnings Caps: The earnings cap for health contributions will increase from $250,000 to $400,000 by May 2028.
- Paid Parental Leave Funds: $25 million will be allocated from the union’s Paid Parental Leave fund to support the health plan.
Detailed Financial Adjustments
As part of the agreement, the contribution rate for health benefits will increase by 3.25% in the first year and by 0.5% in the second year, reaching 16.75%. However, several changes mean that starting in 2027, writers will have to pay monthly premiums of $75, and deductibles will also increase.
Changes Affecting Writers
- The income threshold for health coverage eligibility will rise from $46,759 to $53,773 in 2027.
- Minimum payments for most writers will rise by 1.5% in the first year and by 3% in the following years.
- Residuals for high-budget streaming projects will increase by 2.5% in 2027 and an additional 2.5% in 2029.
Addressing AI Training Compensation
Writers sought compensation related to the use of their work in generative AI but achieved a compromise. The new contract requires companies to notify writers if their scripts are licensed for AI training. The union can then request discussions about potential compensation from this licensing.
Additional Provisions
- Second-step payments for screenwriters will increase from 200% to 225% of the applicable minimum.
- TV writers will gain new rules ensuring initial fees must be paid before subsequent exclusive deals can occur.
- Format fees will see a dramatic increase of 42%, enhancing protections for more writers.
The WGA West board and WGA East council unanimously approved this agreement. Union members will vote on ratification from April 16 to April 24. This negotiation comes as a response to financial challenges, with the health plan experiencing a cumulative loss of $122 million in 2023 and 2024 due to overall healthcare inflation and a contracting industry.
This contract marks a crucial turning point for the WGA, enabling better support for its members during a rapidly changing landscape in media and entertainment. The lengthy negotiation, completed in just three weeks, reflects the urgency of addressing the writers’ concerns and securing their future in the industry.
WGA’s leadership expressed gratitude to members for their solidarity throughout the negotiation process, emphasizing the importance of unity in achieving these significant advances.
