Michelin Guide to Rate Milwaukee Restaurants in Urban Milwaukee Debut

Milwaukee is set to receive notable recognition as the Michelin Guide prepares to evaluate local restaurants. This initiative marks the first time Milwaukee will be included in the Michelin Guide, following a trend that adds cities to the prestigious American Great Lakes edition.

Michelin Guide’s Debut in Milwaukee

The Michelin Guide, renowned for its influential ratings, will consider various establishments in Milwaukee, along with restaurants in Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. This initiative aligns with a growing trend where cities partner with Michelin to enhance tourism through culinary excellence.

The Evaluation Process

Anonymous inspectors from Michelin have already begun their assessments in Milwaukee. They are sampling multiple restaurants across the city, focusing on five essential criteria:

  • Ingredient Quality
  • Mastery of Technique
  • Harmony of Flavors
  • Chef’s Personality in Cuisine
  • Consistency Across Menu

Notably, aspects such as interior decor and service do not influence their ratings.

Partnerships and Impact

This inclusion in the Michelin Guide follows a similar approach used in cities like Boston and Philadelphia, made possible through significant financial commitments from local tourism boards. For instance, Colorado pledged $300,000 over three years for its Michelin representation, while California invested $600,000.

Visit Milwaukee is taking the lead in this initiative, recently announcing its collaboration with Michelin during a press conference at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Peggy Williams-Smith, the president and CEO of Visit Milwaukee, expressed pride in Milwaukee’s culinary scene. She highlighted the city’s “confidence, creativity, and point of view” in the dining landscape.

Future Outlook

The Michelin Guide evaluates restaurants using a three-tier star system. Here’s what the stars signify:

  • One Star: A very good restaurant worth a stop.
  • Two Stars: Excellent cooking worth a detour.
  • Three Stars: Exceptional cuisine worth a special journey.

Aside from stars, restaurants can be recognized as Bib Gourmand for providing good value, or receive a “Recommended” designation if they meet Michelin’s standards without earning a star.

The complete list of establishments invited to the Michelin Guide will be revealed in 2027. This development is a promising step for Milwaukee, as the city looks to showcase its culinary talent on an international stage.
