Amazon Discontinues Support for Older Kindles and Kindle Fires

A new announcement from Amazon reveals significant changes for older Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire devices. Beginning May 20th, 2026, devices released in 2012 or earlier will lose access to the Kindle Store.

Details on the Discontinuation

According to Jackie Burke, an Amazon spokesperson, these devices will no longer allow users to purchase, borrow, or download new content. However, existing content already downloaded on these devices will remain accessible. Users will also be able to use their accounts through the Kindle mobile app, Kindle for Web, and newer devices.

Affected Devices

The change impacts a range of devices, starting from the original Kindle, which was introduced in 2007. The complete list includes:

  • Kindle e-readers launched in 2012 or earlier
  • Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier

It is important to note that if users deregister or factory reset these older devices, they will not be able to re-register them after the established deadline.

Notification for Users

Amazon plans to notify affected users through email prior to the deadline. The notifications will explain the limitations of their older devices. While Kindle e-readers will experience restrictions regarding book purchases, Kindle Fire devices will still have access to other apps and some Amazon services.

Incentives for Upgrading

For users considering an upgrade, Amazon is offering a 20% discount on new Kindle devices. Additionally, users will receive a $20 eBook credit once they upgrade. This offer is valid until June 20th, 2026, at 11:59 PM PT.

Users can continue to access their older purchases on new devices, provided they log in with the same account they have used for over 14 years.
