Aaron Ramsey: Generational Talent Realizes Cymru Dream
Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football at 35. His senior international career with Cymru lasted 16 years.
International career
He earned 86 caps for Wales and scored 21 international goals. Ramsey represented his country at three major tournaments.
John Toshack gave him a senior debut in November 2008 when Ramsey was 17. He had progressed through Wales’ U17, U19 and U21 sides.
Gary Speed made him captain at age 20. He played a central role as Wales reached the EURO 2016 semi-finals.
Wales lost to Portugal in that semi-final, a match Ramsey missed through suspension alongside Ben Davies. He was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.
Ramsey scored twice in a 2-0 win over Hungary to secure EURO 2020 qualification. He also found the net at EURO 2016 against Russia and at EURO 2020 versus Türkiye.
He helped Wales qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, fulfilling a long-held Cymru dream. His final international appearance was in September 2024.
That last outing saw him come off the bench in a 2-1 away Nations League win at Montenegro.
Club career
Ramsey came through the Cardiff City academy and played in the 2008 FA Cup Final loss to Portsmouth. He then moved to Arsenal.
At Arsenal he won the FA Cup three times. He scored the decisive goals in the 2014 and 2017 finals.
A broken leg in 2010 interrupted his progress. He recovered to become a standout Premier League performer under Arsène Wenger.
In 2019 he signed for Juventus. During three seasons in Turin he won Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.
He later joined Rangers, where he lifted the Scottish Cup and reached the 2022 UEFA Europa League final. He finished his playing career with Nice and UNAM in Mexico’s Liga MX.
Across his club career he played almost 550 competitive matches. He also took interim charge of Cardiff City for the final fixtures of 2024/25.
Legacy and retirement
Ramsey thanked the managers and backroom staff who supported him. He described wearing the Welsh shirt as a privilege.
Craig Bellamy praised Ramsey’s influence on younger players and his professional approach. Bellamy highlighted how Ramsey’s attention to detail helped prolong his career.
