St Kilda Residents Rally Against Massive Hotel Redevelopment
A proposed redevelopment of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in St Kilda has generated significant opposition from local residents. The plan involves transforming the current facility into a seven-storey hotel, which many believe is not suitable for the area.
Concerns Over Hotel Expansion
The owners of the hotel, Meydan Group, have submitted a request to Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny for approval to demolish the existing structures. Their proposal includes plans for 204 hotel rooms, rooftop dining, and function spaces. However, this ambitious scheme has raised alarms among locals.
Local Opposition
Jane Briese, a St Kilda resident, expressed her concerns about the height of the proposed redevelopment. She asserted that while the current hotel is in poor condition and needs renovation, a seven-storey building would overpower the neighborhood. Briese stated, “We’d like to see it demolished and rebuilt. Most of the neighbourhood agrees that it’s time for something to be done there, but what they’re proposing is just too big.”
- More than 300 people have signed an online petition against the redevelopment.
- Residents are advocating for restrictions, proposing a maximum height of five stories on Carlisle Street.
- The existing structure is five stories on Albert Street and three stories on most of its footprint on Carlisle Street.
Community Challenges and Perspectives
Local business owners also voiced their worries about the potential impact of such development on St Kilda’s character. Andrew Skoullos, owner of Galleon Cafe, indicated that while development can be positive, its scale must respect the neighborhood’s heritage. Concerns include construction disruptions and increased traffic in the area.
Preservation of Neighborhood Character
Briese highlighted fears that rezoning the Cosmopolitan site could lead to further large-scale developments in the future. She expressed apprehension about possible noise disturbances and traffic issues stemming from new amenities like a rooftop bar and function rooms.
Future of the Redevelopment Proposal
The City of Port Phillip has deferred authority over the decision to the state level. Local ward councillor Serge Thomann confirmed that he and the community would actively oppose the plan. He stated, “We’re here to fight.”
Meydan Group’s managing director Moshe Meydan defended the plans, arguing that the redevelopment would enhance St Kilda’s appeal and support local tourism. He noted that the current hotel’s condition necessitates a modern redesign, which would comply with prevailing regulations.
The final decision from Minister Kilkenny is anticipated in June. The proposal remains open for public consultation until then, underscoring the importance of community input in local development projects.
