Hamilton Typewriter Shop Owner Encourages Intentional Writing Amid Autocorrect Era
In an age dominated by autocorrect and digital editing, Jonathan Marshall is championing a return to intentional writing through typewriters. His venture, the Hamilton Typewriter Company, opened on March 28 at The Cotton Factory, an arts and events venue in Hamilton’s industrial area. Marshall believes that writing on a typewriter promotes mindfulness in word choice.
The Philosophy Behind Typewriting
Marshall, who professionally goes by Jonny Types, states that modern word processors often lead to careless writing. “When you write on a typewriter, a mistake can mean starting over,” he explains. This experience compels writers to engage more thoughtfully with their work.
A Hub for Typewriter Enthusiasts
The Hamilton Typewriter Company serves not only as a repair shop but also as a typewriter museum. Visitors can explore the collection on Fridays or through appointments during the week. At the grand opening, over 200 attendees celebrated the launch, and more than 30 appointments were scheduled afterward.
- Location: The Cotton Factory, Hamilton
- Opening Date: March 28
- Visitor Count: Over 200 at launch
- Initial Appointments: More than 30 scheduled
Building a Community
Marshall is surprised by the local enthusiasm for typewriters, noting collectors from across Canada have reached out. He actively searches thrift stores and resale websites in the Greater Toronto Area, finding at least a dozen new machines each month.
The typewriter appeal transcends demographics, as he enjoys introducing children to the craft during community events. Marshall’s journey with typewriters began a decade ago when he acquired a broken Remington 17 on a road trip. Today, his collection includes 50 machines spanning various popular brands.
A Unique Writing Experience
Beyond repair services, Marshall encourages writing with typewriters for the tactile experience. He describes these machines as “an absolute dream to write on,” attributing a smooth feel to their keys. Many individuals, including children, benefit creatively from using typewriters, as discussed by other industry professionals.
Caring for Your Typewriter
For those new to typewriting, Marshall recommends researching models online and finding one that appeals visually. Proper care includes regular dusting and moisture control to ensure longevity. “Just use it,” he advises, noting typewriters are built for frequent use.
The ultimate goal for Marshall is to reintegrate typewriters into daily life. He envisions a world where writing remains a personal and intentional act, free from the distractions of technology. The Hamilton Typewriter Company stands as a testament to this vision, celebrating the craft of writing one keystroke at a time.
