Hershey Police Charge Parents After Wolf Injures Child at ZooAmerica

Derry Township authorities have taken legal action against the parents of a toddler injured at ZooAmerica. The incident occurred on a Saturday morning around 11:35 AM near Hersheypark. A 17-month-old child managed to slip through a gap in the wooden fence surrounding the wolf enclosure, entering a restricted area.

Incident Details

After accessing the area, the child reached through the metal fence and was bitten on the hand by a wolf. The injuries were described as minor. Bystanders quickly responded, helping to pull the child away from the enclosure.

Parental Responsibilities

The child’s parents, Carrie B. Sortor, 43, and Stephen J.B. Wilson, 61, were reportedly 25 to 30 feet away when the incident unfolded. As a result, both have been charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for endangering the welfare of children. Police emphasize the need for supervision in such locations.

ZooAmerica’s Statement

Quinn Bryner, the public relations director for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, addressed the incident. She stated that an unsupervised child crawling under the exterior fence made contact with the wolf habitat. Bryner reassured that the zoo prioritizes the safety of guests and the well-being of animals, ensuring multiple layers of protection are in place.
