Lecce and Puglia’s Aging Stadiums See Progress Amid Storied Matches

Work has begun in Salento to modernize a key football venue. The effort follows moves elsewhere in Puglia to address aging infrastructure.

Architectural context and regional ties

Nearby, Bari’s San Nicola stadium remains a landmark. Renzo Piano designed it for the 1990 World Cup. The stadium is known for its petal-like roof and spaceship silhouette. It sits on the city’s southern outskirts along the ring road toward Brindisi and Lecce.

Works at Lecce’s Via del Mare

In Lecce crews accelerated activity during the national team break. Two consecutive away defeats at Napoli and Roma also freed up the schedule. On 8 February, after a morale-boosting win over Cremonese, workers removed the central stand roof.

The central stand had been the only covered sector. It will remain uncovered until the next season starts. A new roof that will cover the entire arena is being assembled in the parking area.

Scope of the renovation

Multiple upgrades will proceed in parallel. Teams will waterproof the steps and carry out major maintenance on the east stand. New seating will be installed and the pitch will be relaid.

An updated irrigation system is planned. Bars, hospitality suites and offices will be refurbished. Mixed zones and refreshment areas will also be renovated.

Events and wider coordination

The stadium is named after Ettore Giardiniero since 2002. Giardiniero had launched an expansion project in 1985 and resigned weeks later.

The venue will host events during the XX Mediterranean Games. Those Games run from 21 August to 3 September. Although Taranto holds overall hosting duties, matches and competitions will be spread across the region.

Operational priorities

VAR equipment was temporarily removed to ease roof works. Technicians must reinstall and test that equipment before Monday. Ensuring match-day systems function is the immediate priority.

These efforts form part of attempts to bring Lecce and Puglia’s aging stadiums see progress amid storied matches. Upgrades aim to preserve historic venues while improving fan experience.
