Burns Celebrates 1,000th Consecutive Game, Fueled by Passion for Hockey
Brent Burns has shown durability and determination through recent seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. He navigated injury, surgery and roster decisions while remaining a steady presence on the ice.
Season-by-season performance
In 2023-24 Burns recorded 43 points, with 10 goals and 33 assists. He averaged 21:30 of ice time across 82 games but dealt with an injury that required surgery at season’s end.
The following year, 2024-25, Burns totaled 29 points, scoring six goals and adding 23 assists. He again played all 82 games and averaged 20:57 per night.
Health, contract context and mindset
Burns told reporters in Carolina that the 2023-24 injury made the year difficult physically and mentally. He also said uncertainty surrounded the final season of his contract, and he wanted to assess how his body responded.
After recovering, he reported feeling strong and focused on enjoying the game. Team staff and coaches took note of his preparation and resiliency.
Regular-season finale and streak maintenance
Carolina rested several key players in the April 17, 2025 regular-season finale, a 7-5 loss in Ottawa. Burns still took a single 24-second shift to preserve his consecutive-game ironman streak.
He remained on the bench most of the night, cheering teammates and preparing as if he could play the full game.
Coaches’ assessments
Peter DeBoer, who coached Burns in San Jose from the start of 2015-16 through the first 33 games of 2019-20, praised his athleticism and authentic personality. DeBoer highlighted Burns’ love of practice, training and locker-room banter.
Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour emphasized how rare it is to prepare and perform in every game of a long season. He said Burns’ accountability and preparation set him apart and suggested Burns is on a path toward all-time recognition.
