Hornets Triumph Over Timberwolves, 122-108: A Lopsided Victory
The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-108 on Sunday night in downtown Minneapolis. The loss marked Minnesota’s third straight defeat and dropped their record to 46-32.
Game recap
The teams exchanged runs early, with the Hornets shooting 10-of-21 from three in the first half. Bones Hyland hit four long balls and sank a buzzer-beater to give Charlotte a five-point lead at the break.
The contest remained tight until late in the third quarter. A sequence in which Ayo Dosunmu fouled Coby White on a 3-pointer shifted momentum. White made two free throws, then missed the third. The Hornets secured the rebound and found White for another triple, creating a five-point possession that sparked a 15-0 run.
Second-half collapse
Minnesota scored the first two points after intermission on Dosunmu free throws. They were then outscored 47-21 the rest of the way. A seven-point lead evaporated into a 19-point deficit.
This game continued a worrying trend. Each loss in the current three-game slide has included a massive second-half run by the opponent.
Rebounding and second-chance points
The Hornets collected 16 offensive rebounds and turned those into 24 second-chance points. Minnesota managed 12 points on second opportunities. The Wolves have fallen to 22nd in defensive rebound percentage since the All-Star Break.
Offense and individual struggles
Minnesota is 6-9 over its last 15 games and carries the third-worst offense in the league during that span. Injuries have been a factor, with Anthony Edwards missing eight of the last ten contests while dealing with patellofemoral pain syndrome in his right knee.
Edwards had scored eight points on 3-for-15 shooting in Friday’s game against Philadelphia. Jaden McDaniels and Dosunmu have also missed multiple games during the rough stretch.
Center Naz Reid had a particularly poor night, finishing with six points and missing 11 of 14 shots. Reid averaged 17.7 points per game at the start of February but has dropped to 11.5 since then. His three-point percentage in that span sits at 27.2 percent.
Coach Chris Finch said the staff is monitoring Reid’s shoulder and that his finishing and perimeter attempts looked rushed. Finch added the team must regain its connectiveness and spirit, and called for better individual performances.
Standings implications
The defeat further clarified Minnesota’s likely postseason position. The Wolves now appear overwhelmingly likely to finish as the sixth seed for a second straight season. They sit three games clear in the loss column from teams above and below them.
The Denver Nuggets have closed the gap to tie the Los Angeles Lakers for the third seed. The Lakers hold the tiebreaker. It was also reported that both Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves will miss the rest of the regular season, possibly longer, making it harder for Los Angeles to maintain pace.
Playoff preview
With the standings tightening, a playoff series between the Nuggets and the Timberwolves is increasingly likely. Minnesota will need to shore up rebounding and late-game defense to change that picture.
What’s next
Minnesota begins a three-game road trip with a matchup in Indiana. The Wolves face the Pacers, who have struggled through an injury-riddled season and hold an 18-60 record since a loss in Game 7 of the NBA Finals a year ago. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT and the broadcast airs on FanDuel Sports Network.
