Marlins Revamp Pitching Strategy for Sunday’s Showdown with Yankees
The Miami Marlins began the season 5-1 with series wins over the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox. The club then dropped the first two games at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Saturday’s 9-7 loss stung most, after a 4-0 lead evaporated.
Opening role for Pete Fairbanks
The Marlins announced a late change to their pitching plans for Sunday. Closer Pete Fairbanks will start the game in an opener role.
Chris Paddack, originally scheduled to start, will still appear in the contest. The team plans to use Fairbanks for an inning or so before turning to other pitchers.
Personal reasons and roster moves
Fairbanks will be placed on the paternity list on Monday. His wife is scheduled for an induced labor that morning. The club wanted him available before that absence.
Weather and scheduling concerns
Rain moved through the Northeast and affected the planned start time. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the opener was delayed to at least 3 p.m. EST.
Because this is the only Marlins-Yankees series this year, a cancellation would create rescheduling problems. Finding a mutual date later in the season would be difficult.
Fairbanks’ contract and early performance
President of baseball operations Peter Bendix signed Fairbanks in December. The deal runs one year for $13 million, with up to $1 million in incentives.
Through three appearances before Sunday, Fairbanks allowed one hit across three innings. He recorded five strikeouts and earned two saves.
Strategic note
The Marlins have adjusted their game plan to balance family needs and roster availability. This revamp of pitching strategy aims to preserve bullpen depth for the days ahead.
